STERANKO Hercules embellishment

I spotted this wicked cool pencil drawing of Hercules by Jim Steranko, and was compelled to ink it. So I light-boxed the sketch onto 11x17 bristol, dipped my brush into some Higgins, and went to town!

Just discovered your art work. Amazing stuff! As an artist myself just now delving into brush and ink comicbook style work I was wondering if you could explain when you're replicating someones work (like the Steranko covers) do you have a black and white print you are working from or just the colored covers, or is it on a computer monitor so you can zoom in? Thanks!

Thanks! I make a copy of the piece, then light-box it onto bristol. Then I try to mimic the copy, line for line in the inks. (That's the hard part.)

Ok thanks! So by light-boxing it onto bristol, the copied image is under the bristol paper and the light is allowing the image to show through a bit? Do you keep another copy on hand to refference the detail? I will be sure to order your book to answer even more questions!

Hi Gary! i'm reading... ow, better, STUDYING, your tremendous book!
There's something i can't understand at the end of chapter IV, when you describe the technique of inking figure 30 and figure 31. The two figures are exactly the same, even if you say you used two different ways of inking. Do you know if there is a print mistake?
I have the second edition, 2005.
Anyway, great job!
Thank you
Matt

Yes, you have a good eye! They put the wrong figure in there.

I was curious to know if you do ink work commissions? As in if you would to ink over someone's pencils if they're not "pro". Not for an amateur or beginning artist, but for a hobbyist or freelancer.

Sure, I do that sometimes. If you can send me a scan or link to the pencil art you want inked, I'd be happy to give you a price quote. My email is: inkart@earthlink.net.
